Warka Water Cameroon
Natural rattan wall.

To construct the natural partition wall is a long working process: First, our team goes to the forest for the material harvesting. Rattan grows year-round and there are no harvesting seasons. Harvesting is difficult considering the inaccessibility of the deep rainforest. The first cut and strip the rattan of its thorny outer layer. Then we wash the rattan with water to clean the product and stripping away the layer of silica that tends to coat the core rattan. After that, the rattan will be dried to remove excess moisture under the hot equatorial sun for two or three days. The rattan is ready for use after drying. Then, the further process into peel for weaving. A partition like this takes 5 days for our craftsman to be viewed and one day to be mounted. Each Warka House has 2 internal partitions like this.

Stay tuned to follow the progress on the Warka Village construction and please keep supporting us !!!!...

Natural Straw Ropes

We make our own customised ropes intertwining natural straw. One packet of straw makes an average of 5 cords (8 m long). For example we use 50 ropes, 8m in length, to fix the thatch straw roof on the Warka Pavilion’s, against the wind, this technique typical of the northern region of Cameroon. To weave a rope-like this, a person takes 3 hours. Hence in a day, you can do a maximum of 3 ropes. For our needs and to complete the job we consider a person full time for 4 weeks.

Adobe bricks are a fireproof, durable yet biodegradable, non-toxic building material that provides sufficient thermal mass to buildings to ensure excellent thermal performance. They are also low sound transmission levels through walls and a general feeling of solidity and security. Adobe is an excellent building material but unfortunately today it is out of fashion. It is eco-friendly and economic, and so is the sunshine used to dry mud bricks until they’re solid enough for construction, the only costs are in labor and time. Moreover, no costly tools or equipment are necessary and the essential know-how can be easily acquired on a training workshop and through hands-on experiences.

Warka Village

Work is well progressing here at the Warka Village. Currently at the construction site, we are undertaking several activities in parallel. Two carpenters are prefabricating the triangular structural lattice frames for the 6th Warka House. A team of seven people is dedicated to the landscaping and they are cleaning, excavating, and modeling the ground surface. Two more people are fully dedicated to the Warka Forest project and they are planting fruit trees in the Warka Village site. A group of four artisans are viewing the raffia leaves and the dry straw to make the panels and cables we need for the thatch roofs. We have four people in the forest searching for construction materials and six more are occupied for the transport of the harvested materials from the forest to the Warka Village.
Stay tuned we will keep you updated on the progress.!!!

The Warka Pavilion was finally completed today with the setting of the thatching roofs tip. The structure is realized only by local natural materials sourced from the surrounding rainforest: straw and wood. It is biodegradable, environmentally friendly, not expensive, and extremely durable. The main material is the fresh straws, made from green grass that grows naturally and abundantly on site. It has been a long process the viewing activity, it took to one artisan 50 days to complete the job! It is all made by hand like a big basket.

Warka Tower 4.2

The stepped cylinder, the core of the Warka Tower 4.2, is under construction and it is made only by earth, water and straws. It is inspired by the northern Cameroonian traditional ancient construction techniques. Mud is an excellent building material but unfortunately today it is out of fashion. The walls are eco-friendly and economic, the only costs are in labor and time. Another advantage of building with earth is that the art-craft is a durable yet biodegradable, non-toxic building material. Moreover, no costly tools or equipment are necessary and the essential know-how can be easily acquired on a training workshop and through hands-on experiences
Warka Village will be entirely constructed with Mud, Wood, and Natural fibers.

Making Bricks

Mud is among the most popular building materials in many countries. Mud is plentiful and economic, and so is the sunshine used to dry mud bricks until they’re solid enough for construction. The only costs are in labor and time. It’s a relatively straightforward process that’s been employed with many variations since around 7000 B.C.
Ingredients:
Dirt
Sand
Straw, grass
Water
Sunlight
A mold to shape the bricks

Bake bricks in sunshine for five days
